Testing Experience Magazine: The Archive

From March 2008 to December 2014, Testing Experience was a free quarterly PDF magazine for professional testers, published in Berlin. This hub records all 28 issues, the tutorial series and the sister title, and explains what happened to the subscriptions.

Testing Experience described itself as the magazine for professional testers. It was published four times a year in English, distributed as a PDF that was free to download after registration, and edited by Jose Diaz, whose name appears as an anchor on tester community pages in German and Hungarian. Twenty-eight issues appeared between March 2008 and December 2014. The publisher was a testing consultancy and training company that also ran a tutorial series called Knowledge Transfer, organized an agile testing conference in Germany, served as media partner to community events such as the Eclipse Testing Day, and launched a sister title for IT security called Security Acts.

The magazine mattered because it bridged communities that rarely read each other. Its issue files were shared on security mailing lists (for a 2009 article on the OSSTMM), cited on a developer-platform blog (for a 2009 argument about testers on agile teams), listed by university and industrial research repositories (for articles their staff published in it), summarized by tester blogs in Portuguese, Spanish, Russian, Chinese, Korean, Hungarian and Polish, and referenced by testing tool projects on their plugin pages. About a thousand websites still link to the domain for those reasons.

Publication stopped after issue 28. The site stayed online for a few years without new content and then lapsed. In 2026 the domain was relaunched under new, independent ownership as the knowledge base you are reading. This site is not the original publisher, does not hold the magazine's archive, and does not distribute the original PDFs. What it does is keep an honest record of each issue (file names, who linked it, with what anchor, and the theme where the evidence supports one) so that a link from 2011 lands on something true, and it publishes current guides on the subjects the magazine covered.

If you arrived here from a subscribe, login or register link: there is nothing to subscribe to. The registration wall protected the PDF downloads, and the downloads are gone. The issue index lists every issue with its link record; twelve issues with substantial link histories have their own record pages. The Knowledge Transfer page covers the tutorial series, Security Acts the sister title, and recommended reading replaces the old recommendations page with current books, standards and communities.

The guides on this site are organized into the four themes the magazine returned to most: test management, test automation, agile testing and testing techniques. Where a guide continues a theme the link record attaches to a specific issue, the guide says so and links the issue record, and the issue record links back. Nothing on the site claims to know an issue's contents beyond what the citing pages say.

If you arrived from an old link, the file name tells you which period it came from. Names of the form testingexperience0N_YY.pdf at the site root, such as testingexperience02_09.pdf, are 2008 to mid-2010 files named by quarter within the year (that one is the second file of 2009: issue 6, June 2009). Names of the form testingexperienceNN_MM_YY.pdf, with or without an issues/ folder, are September 2010 to December 2014 files carrying the issue number, month and year; the same folder also holds renamed copies of the early files. Links with a pk_campaign query string came from the publisher's newsletter in 2012 and 2013. Every shape redirects to the issue's record page or, for the sixteen issues without one, to the issue index, which has the conversion between the two schemes and a worked example.

The five guide hubs continue the magazine's themes rather than its format. Test Management takes up the launch issue's ground: test process, test plans, risk-based testing, estimation and TMMi. Test Automation continues the open source tools theme of issue 12 and the pipeline questions of the 2012 issues. Agile Testing continues the argument about testers on agile teams that issue 7 was cited for and the specification-by-example ground of issue 16's editorial. Testing Techniques holds security testing (the OSSTMM article of issue 6 and the Security Acts bridge), mobile app testing (issue 28) and the classical design techniques. Testing AI Systems has no precedent in the magazine; it applies the same discipline of evidence, base rates and confidence intervals to components that learn, which did not exist as a testing problem in 2014.

The 12 issue records

Every issue that other sites still cite in numbers has a record page. The rest are listed in the complete issue index.

Inside the archive

Four pages record what the original site's most linked sections were and what stands in their place.

Common questions

Is Testing Experience magazine still published?

No. The last issue was number 28, December 2014. This site is an independent 2026 relaunch of the domain as a knowledge base; it is not the original publisher.

Can I download back issues here?

No. The original PDFs are not distributed by this site. Each issue record documents the file names and the sites that still link them so that old links resolve to an accurate description.

How do I subscribe?

There is no subscription. The old subscribe, login and register pages protected PDF downloads that no longer exist. Those addresses now redirect to this hub and the issue index.

Who published Testing Experience?

A Berlin testing consultancy and training company, with Jose Diaz as editor. It also ran the Knowledge Transfer tutorials, an agile testing conference and the sister magazine Security Acts.

Why are only twelve issues given their own pages?

Those twelve have enough link history (nine or more referring domains, or a named citation) to write an evidence-based record. The other sixteen are listed in the issue index with their file names and counts.

Where can I read current material on the magazine's subjects?

The four guide hubs on the magazine's themes (Test Management, Test Automation, Agile Testing and Testing Techniques) and a fifth, Testing AI Systems, added in 2026. Thirty-two guides, each with figures, tables and sources.
